Braving Brioche Blunders: How to Tink and Fix Your Squishy Knitting

with Gabrielle Augustine

Presentation Length: 18 minutes

Description:

Making mistakes in your knitting is never fun – and making mistakes in brioche knitting can be a little scary. Braving Brioche Blunders aims to demystify some of the most common mistakes Gabrielle has seen while teaching brioche (and she’s been guilty of making them too!) as well as ways to go about setting your knitting right. Using a brioche swatch, Gabrielle demonstrates how to tink (unknit) brioche one stitch at a time, make sure all stitches and yarn overs are sitting in the correct direction, picking up dropped yarn overs, and how to make a left-leaning decrease lean right and vice versa. Brioche knitting creates beautiful fabric. With these tips, you’ll be able to confidently fix any inevitable mistakes when tackling larger and more complex projects.

Braving Brioche Blunders: How to Tink and Fix Your Squishy Knitting

While Gabrielle Augustine is a museum curator by day, knitting has brought her joy since her grandmother taught her to knit as a pre-teen.

For years, Gabrielle has created her own designs but finally writing them as patterns began while developing projects to teach new techniques and stitch patterns at her LYS, Sybil’s Yarn Shop in Milford, NY. Designing for classes challenged her to think about clarity, accessibility, and how to break down complex techniques into achievable steps that empower knitters to learn and grow.

Gabrielle’s goal for her designs, found on Ravelry as Whimsical Woolies, is to reflect this teaching approach—thoughtfully constructed and approachable patterns that always have a focus on building skills while creating something beautiful.
